The first thing to check is the water level in your battery. On my bike, when the water level is below half on the sight lines, the bike won't keep a charge at low temperatures. Warming it up seems to somehow boost the available charge, but not for long.
As far as the choke goes, if the lever doesn't fall out of the carb when you set it on full choke, than it is working. The odds of the choke plate going bad are fairly slim.
Top up the battery, give it a good deep charge, and everything should be fine.
